Conventional wisdom says banks should meet customers where customers want to interact, whether it’s mobile, online, or even – gasp – at the branch. But how about letting customers design their own accounts? Does that sound like crazy talk? Not to Union BanCal Corp., based in San Francisco. The bank, which has assets of $88.2 billion and operates as “Union Bank,” launched Banking By Design in October 2012, to the horror of buttoned-up bankers across the country. With Banking By Design, customers don’t need to accept products or services they don’t need. Instead, they can pay a la carte for just the things they want – what a concept! We think they got the idea from Baskin-Robbins.
