Pageonce made a name for itself as an account aggregator back when the iPhone was brand new. Users could see all of their accounts in one place — hence the name.
All that is about to change, even the name. The company is announcing today that its name will now be … Check.
COO Steve Schultz explained to Bank Innovation that the name works in three ways. One is the company’s goal to replace checks with the mobile phone, as exemplified by its product Pay Anyone. The other two ways Schultz says the name works are making check marks and checking boxes as on a to-do list; and keeping life in check.
And we though it was just about checking your account balances.
The company has 8 million users and built in bill pay functionality in 2011. It processes more than $1 million a day in payments.
As indicated in the graph above, the company has its eye on commerce/point of sale — otherwise known as digital wallet. So while it is now focused on mobile payments via bill pay, and P2P with Pay Anyone, look for a mobile wallet of some kind in future. “The networks will evolve,” Schultz said. He wrote some commentary on the topic last summer.
The name change was pushed out to users in a new app update, as well as email notification, today. The press release announcing the change is here.
Will the name change be enough to differentiate Check, which can be found at www.check.me, from the competition? Will the company Check play a part in killing off the personal check?
We’re a bit lukewarm on the name — Pay Anyone, the name of one of its products, seems to give a clearer sense of the value the company offers — but it does beat Pageonce.
