Two online financial brands collided today when PayPygg formally changed its name to Pygg. The new brand clashes with SmartyPig, an online savings site.
Pygg, a “social” payments provider, says it changed its name to prevent references to PayPay:
Why the name change? We just wanted to keep you on your toes. Only kidding… there are a few reasons actually, but the main reason is that we had lots of people asking us if we are “kind of like PayPal.” We aren’t. Pygg is all about social, public payments between friends and family. As such, we decided to remove the “pay” part of our official name. It’s all part of the learning!
Of course, this is not the first or last time that innovative banking brands will collide. I can’t say I foresaw that the word causing the overlap would be “pig,” however.
