Gordon Brown is stopping staff (or should that be civil servants) at (the now nationalised) RBS from getting bonuses. He is also muttering darkly about Lloyds (40% owned by Her Maj’s Gov) staff bonuses.
He is trying to make up political ground on David Cameron (Tory Leader).
The political problem for Gordon is that playing to the gallery and saying “these idiots who bankrupted their banks don’t deserve bonuses” is all very well until a voice from the audience asks “what about the Chancellor who introduced the ‘light touch regulation’ which allowed the ‘idiots’ to bankrupt the banks should he get the bonus of a second term as PM?”
Banks have become a political football* and Gordon Brown may be about to score an own goal.
