U.S. Bank looks to other industries to spark AI innovation

U.S. Bank technology leaders attend the Consumer Electronics Show every year to spark innovation ideas for the bank’s research and development team; this year the focus was on all things AI.

“What we’re here for is to see what everybody else is doing with [AI],” Chief Innovation Officer Don Relyea told Bank Automation News from the event earlier this month in Las Vegas. Innovations he saw included AI tech to improve a baseball swing and an AI-driven scalp analysis.

While most innovations were not tailored to financial services, Relyea and Head of Applied Foresights Todder Moning looked at how other industries are leveraging AI and how those ideas might help create personalized experiences for the $668 billion bank’s customers.

One innovation, BeamO, a health checkup device, collects and stores health data on individuals through sensors and AI, Moning said. That use shows that companies are using AI, sensors and the cloud to improve the lives of their users — ideas they can take back to U.S. Bank’s innovation team.

Standout technology

Along with AI innovation, Moning and Relyea identified technology that could have financial applications, the pair told BAN.

For one, a spatial computer for productivity, Nimo 1, by Nimo Planet, could improve the work experience for remote employees, Relyea said.

Nimo 1 is a pocket-sized computer designed to enhance productivity for remote and hybrid workers, according to Nimo Planet’s website.

Nimo 1 can bridge the hybrid experience by offering employees the same desktop experience in the office or at home with access to all of the same tools an employee needs in any setting they are working in, Relyea said.

“There’s so much [at CES], from across so many industries, that it’s one place that we can see the latest,” Moning told BAN.

At the 2023 show, Moning and Relyea explored AI-driven face analytics, metaverse technologies and embedded payments, Moning previously told BAN.

The bank’s voice assistant, Smart Assistant, which launched in 2020, was inspired by CES attendance, Relyea previously told BAN.
