Movers and Shakers: JPMorgan appoints China to co-head for Innovation Economy

JPMorgan on July 11 appointed John China as the co-head of Innovation Economy (IE) for Commercial Banking (CB). China joined the $3.2 trillion bank after serving as president of Silicon Valley Bank, which was acquired by First Citizens Bank this year, for more than four years until this month. China will serve alongside New York-based Melissa Smith , who is continuing her dual roles as co-head of IE and head of specialized industries for CB, according to the release. The New York-based bank’s commercial banking arm will provide services to companies in verticals ranging from technology, disruptive commerce, life sciences and climate tech to healthcare IT industries, the release stated. The commercial bank is accelerating its investment strategy to support “startups, founders and VC firms globally, across every stage of their life cycle,” from seed funding to IPO and beyond, China told Bank Automation News . By the end of 2023, IE for commercial banking will have presence in 29 countries including the U.K., Nordics, EMEA, Ireland and Germany, China added. Visa appoints Suh as the new CFO Card giant Visa has appointed Chris Suh chief financial officer. Suh will replace Vasant Prabhu , a 23-year veteran of the company who is leaving Sept. 30. Suh was CFO of gaming behemoth Electronic Arts and had held finance leadership roles at Microsoft for over 25 years, according to a June 20 release. “His deep experience in finance and technology, plus his leadership in growing and scaling businesses, will be extraordinarily valuable to us as we continue to drive growth and better serve our clients around the world,” Visa CEO Ryan McInerney said of Suh. Le Caillec new CFO at AmEx Card payments network company American Express announced in a release on June 27 that Deputy Chief Financial Officer Christophe Le Caillec will become CFO upon the retirement of Jeffrey C. Campbell on Aug. 14. Le Caillec has been with American Express for more than 25 years, including stints as executive vice president of finance and CFO of the AmEx small business segment. Campbell joined American Express as CFO in 2013 and will remain with the company as vice chairman until March 2024, the release stated. “As we continue to deliver on our growth plan, Jeff’s disciplined approach and astute financial stewardship have positioned us well for the future,” AmEx Chief Executive Steve Squeri said in the news release. “I am looking forward to working even more closely with Christophe, a deeply experienced American Express executive who will bring his own substantial talents to the role.” Marqeta hires Crawford as new chief marketing officer Card issuing company Marqeta has hired Karna Crawford as its new chief marketing officer. Crawford has lead marketing teams at JPMorgan, Ford and Verizon and will drive Marqeta’s “global marketing efforts, including marketing and brand strategy, demand generation, product marketing and communications,” according to a June 29 release from the company. [caption id="attachment_57369843" align="alignright" width="200"] Courtesy of Marqeta: Karna Crawford MQ CMO[/caption] Crawford told BAN that she is passionate about digital payments and fintech and aims to “tell a story about Marqeta’s solutions that are fueling the tremendous growth of embedded finance and continuing to innovate in the space of modern card issuing and processing through embedded experiences.” The company serves 40 geographies and Crawford aims to create “marketing content and plans centrally and deliver regionalized versions to meet the unique needs of each market” with the US and EU being the primary focus of the company, she said. E6 names Muse-McKenney CRO Payments provider E6 announced on Tuesday that Brian Muse-McKenney will join the company as its new chief revenue officer. Prior to joining E6, Muse-McKenney was chief business officer at HSBC and helped the bank launch PayMe, a social payments app, like Venmo, in Hong Kong, he told BAN . Prior to joining E6, he was a non-executive director at the company for nearly three years, Muse-McKenney said. “My focus is on driving the company's global growth and expanding our customer base as we enter a phase of accelerated growth,” Muse-McKenney said. The company is looking to provide a one-stop shop for all payments needs, ranging from multiple currency payments to loyalty program creation, Muse-McKenny said. Microsoft , IBM , HSBC and Karta are some companies that use E6’s payments platform.
