An outage has been reported on HSBC’s online banking and mobile apps today, according to website DownDetector, which tracks outages in real time.
“We’re working hard to fix an intermittent issue with mobile and online banking services,” the $3 trillion bank said in a tweet on social media platform X. “Debit and credit cards, digital wallet and ATMs are all working.”
Service Update 5pm: We’re working hard to fix an intermittent issue with Mobile and Online Banking services. Debit and credit cards, digital wallet and ATMs are all working. You can still authorise online card purchases via SMS. We’re really sorry, please check back for updates.

Outages increasing at major banks
Despite high-tech budgets, major banks including Barclays, Capital One and Lloyds have recently reported outages, as Bank Automation News’ has previously reported.
Banks usually suffer outages due to “antiquated systems,” Spencer Kimball, chief executive at New York-based fintech Cockroach Labs, previously told BAN, adding that banks need to update older systems and have a distributed infrastructure to avoid outages.
The following FIs have recently reported outages:
- On Feb. 3, Lloyds Bank clients took to Downdetector to report service issues;
- On Jan. 31, Barclays reported technical disruptions; and
- On Jan. 16, Capital One experienced an outage due to a power failure at a third-party vendor.
