Google added more than 12,000 employees in the third quarter, with around 2,600 solely focused on its cloud platform security.
The company in March acquired cybersecurity firm Mandiant for $5.4 billion, and the cloud-based employee additions will help integrate new features into the Google Cloud platform, according to a company release.

Google reported for Q3:
- Google Cloud revenue clocked in at $6.8 billion, a 38% increase year over year;
- Overall sales climbed 6% YoY to $6.9 billion; and
- Expenses grew to $51 billion, a 17% YoY increase.
The tech giant plans to continue to invest in its cloud technologies, Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said during Tuesday’s Q3 earnings call.
“The long-term trends that are driving cloud adoption continue to play an even stronger role during uncertain macroeconomic times,” Pichai said. “Google Cloud helps customers solve today’s business challenges, improve productivity, reduce costs and unlock new growth engines. [It is] is a priority for the company and we continue to invest there.”
The company has already seen adoption of its cloud platform in larger banks, such as Wells Fargo, and expects this trend to continue as companies continue to adopt cloud-based architecture in their systems, Pichai said during the call.
The upgraded Google Cloud platform will give businesses the ability to reduce unnecessary spending along with access to infrastructure and platform services and collaboration tools, he added.
“As companies globally are looking to drive efficiencies, Google Cloud’s open infrastructure creates a valuable pathway to reduce IT costs and modernize,” Pichai said.
